To import food products into the European Union (EU), the following requirements must be met:
- Compliance with EU food safety regulations: All food products must comply with EU food safety regulations, such as the General Food Law Regulation and specific sectorial legislation like those for Novel Food, Organic products, etc.
- Health certificate: A health certificate issued by the competent authorities of the exporting country, certifying that the food products meet EU food safety requirements.
- Traceability: All food products must have traceability information, including the name and address of the manufacturer, and details of the origin of the food products.
- Labeling requirements: Food products must meet EU labeling requirements, including mandatory information like ingredients list, allergen labeling, nutrition information, etc.
- Food business operator (FBO) registration: The importer must be registered as a food business operator with the competent authorities in the EU member state where the products will be marketed.
- Customs procedures: Imported food products must comply with EU customs procedures, including payment of duties and taxes.
- Specific requirements for some products: Certain food products, such as meat and dairy products, have specific requirements and may require additional certificates or approvals.
